At the beginning of 2015, Cristiano Ronaldo looked set to capture Pichichi without any competition after leaving everyone in the dust, but here comes Lionel Messi ruining things for him once again.
I woke up early this morning after getting 3 hours worth of sleep – ah, the things I do for FCB! – just to see if I got my Leo hat trick prediction correct. The wizard didn’t let me down.
After receiving the ball from Xavi, Suarez opened the scoreline with a fantastic goal in the 6th minute. Barcelona should have ended the first half with 3-4 goals, but they were wasteful on many occasions. Rayo did not sit back and defend. They attacked and almost gave us a scare. They played well today.
In the 49th minute, Pique doubled the lead for Barcelona. Tito was sent off for a foul on Suarez inside the area leaving Rayo with 10 men. Ref pointed to the spot and awarded a penalty. Leo is not a skilled penalty taker, but when he gets them right, he gets them right. His first was saved by the goalie, but due to the players running ahead (encroachment) while he was taking the penalty, he had to retake and he made no mistake with the second one.
Suarez attempted a shot in the 63rd minute forcing a save from Alvarez, but Messi was there to tap in the rebound. Leo completed his hat-trick five minutes later with a vintage type Leo goal. Alves saw a straight red for his challenge on Baptistao right in front of Bravo, and Rayo was awarded a penalty. Bueno converted it in the 81st minute.
Suarez had the last say after latching onto a Messi cross to score his brace. 6-1 the final result.
I simply ❤ the unselfish team player that Suarez is! Alves will miss next weekend’s game against Eibar. Man of the Match? Well, it’s a tough one. Although Leo scored a hat-trick, he was quiet for most of the game. Suarez had a brace. Both did well, but I’ll have to go with Mathieu for providing a wonderful service at the back.
With this victory, Barcelona will stay on top of the table for now with 62 points, just one more point than Real Madrid. I don’t want to hear ‘We can’t see from on top of the table’ because the league is still very open. With his hat-trick, Messi has equalled Ronaldo for most goals in the league with 30 and is the player with the most hat-tricks in the league with 24.
Good job today team.
