Unlikely heroes. That’s what great stories are made off!
Barcelona went into this game as the top team, the team in form while Madrid went in as well, Madrid. 🙂 Everything was at stake this evening. Reputation, bragging rights, the goals, and, of course, the points.
Barcelona started the game rather hurriedly holding onto a 63% possession, only for Madrid to get the better of them during the first half, settling at a lesser speed. Bale almost found an opening in the 6th minute after collecting a nice pass from Isco, but Pique was positioned perfectly to prevent damage. In the 12th minute, Ronaldo hits the bar. A minute later, Isco went wide.
Suárez earns a free kick and Messi clips it into the box. Mathieu gets ahead of Ramos and GOAL! The big Frenchman rocketed a fantastic header in the bottom right corner to put Barcelona in front. Pepe is yellow-carded in the 21st minute. In the 26th minute, Marcelo strikes, but Mathieu is there to cover well. In the 28th minute Suárez gets booked. In the 31st minute, Neymar misses a wonderful opportunity to make it 2-0, Madrid goes on the counter, Benzema beautifully flick the ball into the path of Ronaldo, who struck goal pass Bravo for the equalizer.
In the 37th, Alba is booked for protesting to the referee at Ronaldo’s dive, and Cristiano also gets booked for diving. Madrid thought they went ahead in the 40th minute when Ronaldo provided for Bale, who scored, but the flag was up for offside. Ronaldo was caught offside. Ramos is booked before half time.
Madrid started the second half with a vengeance. Carvajal goes into the book in the 48th minute, Modric in the 52nd. Madrid might have been 2-3 goals up in the early stage of this half had it not been for the heroics of Bravo. We wasted many opportunities too, but in the 56th minute, Alves crosses for Suárez, who made no mistake in finding the back of Casillas’ net. Beautiful goal against the run of play and it is with this goal in this clasico, that Suárez instantly became a legend.
Mascherano is booked in the 61st minute after Ronaldo kicked out at him and he went down clutching his face. I mean, seriously Mascherano! What kind of behavior was that? The yellow card continued to rain at the Camp Nou when Isco was booked in the 64th minute and Iniesta in the next minute. Alves was not to miss out on this party when he went into the book in the 71st minute.
Messi came close to scoring in the 73rd minute, but tonight was not to be for the little magician. Alba could have gotten our 3rd after going one-on-one with the goalie, but Casillas made the vital save. Barcelona had the edge in the closing minutes, but 2-1 will be the final scoreline on this eclectic evening.
My MOTM was Mathieu and Pique. They held down the back perfectly.
