“We signed Mathieu for other reasons than scoring goals. He has been performing well since the start of the season.”
– Luis Enrique
People who know me, knows how I feel about Jérémy Mathieu.
When it was announced that he was joining Barcelona, I was unashamedly excited while others moaned about his age. I know what we were getting: a versatile player who had a 82.8% pass success. He shows up in big games and is not afraid to use a risky tackle in the name of the team. Come to think of it, our French defenders can be too risky at times. Mexes is also one of those players who don’t mind taking one for the team. Adil Rami … I’m going off track here.
Mathieu scored a superb header in the El Clasico, immediately entering into the book of legends and he followed that up with another header against Celta over the weekend, which happened to be the match winning goal. Mathieu had nothing to prove to me, but I am glad he is making some of the Barcelona fans reconsider him as just baggage. The man loves his job and when he’s out there playing, he’s playing for team.
Here are his numbers for Barcelona so far:
30 games, 25 starts, 2290 minutes, 3 goals, 0 assists, 5 yellow cards, 0 red cards
Keep doing you, Mathieu.
