French coaches in England: Philippe Montanier

NAME: Philippe Montanier

CLUB: Nottingham Forest

This dashing Frenchman hails from Vernon. A former goalkeeper, he played for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 sides including Caen (1987-1990), Nantes (1990-91), Caen again (1991-94), Toulouse (1994-97), Gueugnon (1997-99) and Saint-Étienne (1999-2000).

Montanier was named the best Ligue 2 manager in 2009 after he successfully achieved Ligue 1 promotion with US Boulogne. The Frenchman managed Valenciennes, Real Sociedad, and Rennes before accepting the Nottingham Forest job.

Since taking charge of the Championship side, Monsieur Montanier has signed Apostolos Vellios and Thomas Lam. When asked about other potential targets, he joked:

“I look, and Messi and Neymar are not ready to come to Nottingham. It is a joke, we of course have targets.”

Nottingham recently played and won 2-1 against their local rivals Notts County in a pre-season friendly derby.

Montanier has his season cut out for him. I wish him every success with Nottingham, a club I kind of have a soft spot for.

My heart simply beats football.
