Fans of the beautiful game were left shocked earlier this week when the first ever green card was awarded in league football. This took place during a Serie B match in Italy. Why this green card?
The green card is an initiative to promote sportsmanship among its players and will be given at the end of the match.
Simply, think of it as fair play. At the end of the season, the player with the most green cards will be awarded. Vicenza’s Cristian Galano received Serie B’s first green card for fair play against Virtus Entella. Why? The referee Marci Mainardi had called for a corner kick. The kicker? It was the incorrect decision. After the match, Galano had admitted that no VE defenders had touched the ball. Honesty prevails! 🙂
I am still on the fence about this green card thing because I don’t think this is necessary. Footballers should learn how to play fair and be honest without looking for any sort of reward at the end of the season. We’ll see how this plays out.
